Okay so this isn't really Apple or iPhone related but it is important and that's why we have posted it today. Despite the most stringent of measures being put in place, large scale security breaches remain a black cloud over the technology that we use today. It has just been reported that a Russian Bitcoin site has leaked a total of 5 million Gmail addresses and passwords. It was thought that these passwords were specific to the Gmail accounts in question but now it seems that the credentials have been snatched from external websites of users who signed up using a Google email.
No one knows how this massive inventory of emails and passwords has been captured, although according to information that has come to light via Reddit, it's unlikely that Google is at fault. It is being claimed that up to 60% of the leaked emails and passwords are still valid, and may have been collected over a number of years. If you are a Gmail users, particularly one that uses the same password when signing up to certain sites and services, you need to go and change your passwords immediately and check to see if you have been caught up in this latest breach.
If you are worried that your details may have been leaked and out there in the open, you need to go to isleaked.com and enter your email address. From here, you will quickly be able to see if your account is in any danger. The site is a little hit and miss at the minute because of the high amount of traffic visiting so keep trying if you can't get it at first. The site does load in Russian so make sure to hit the flag at the top of the screen to get the site in English.
If you find that your details have been leaked and are out in the open, the next thing you need to do is change your password immediately. Try to ensure that you pick something completely different and where you can, use a two-step verification process.
With so many security breaches and scandals of late, it makes you wonder whether anywhere is safe. This was demonstrated only a couple of weeks ago with the leaks of ill-obtained celebrity photos. No one can afford to be complacent about their security at the moment and you need to make sure all your devices are kept as safe as possible and that you change your passwords on a regular basis. We will keep you updated should any more information on this breach be released.
